Brown, bubbly and effervescent. A blast from the past straight to the present. Singer, songwriter, producer extraordinaire. The realest of the real. Betty Wright is a soul and R&B singer with deep gospel roots. She influenced a generation of female singer-songwriters and continues to influence the world of R&B and hip hop, who sample some of her more famous material.
Born singing gospel with the family group, the Echoes of Joy, Wright began experimenting with R&B music in 1965 when she was only 11 years old. In 1968, she released her first album «My First Time Around» and scored her first national hit at the age of 14. In 1971, Wright scored her biggest hit at the age of 17 with the classic song «Clean Up Woman», which reached #2 R&B and #6 Pop. In 1975, Wright had a big year with the hit songs «Tonight is the Night» (about a real life love affair that happened with Wright when she was a teenager) and «Where is the Love?» (won Grammy for Best R&B Song).
After several more solid hits during the next decade, Wright started her own record label, Ms. B Records in 1985. In 1988, Wright made music history by being the first woman to have a gold record on her own label, with the release of her album «Mother Wit» that she wrote, arranged and produced herself. The album featured one of her biggest hits in years, «No Pain No Gain», which reached #11 R&B, with Wright displaying her powerful upper register capabilities and seven-octave range.
In recent years, Wright had another hit song «Baby», an amazing collaboration with her dear friend Angie Stone which garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Duet. Wright is also credited with co-producing two albums by Joss Stone which received multiple Grammy nominations, vocal production on Diddy and Keyshia Cole’s Top 10 hit «Last Night», vocal coaching on Making The Band 3 which spawned the group Danity Kane, and co-producing the critically acclaimed «Bible Belt» by Diane Birch.
Wright has also mentored several young singer/songwriters in a home-based camp called the MOST, which is an acronym for Mountain Of Songs Today. She has been instrumental in the careers of hundreds of artists through vocal coaching, production, song writing, backing vocalist, music consultancy, etc. Throughout her legendary career, Wright has worked with many of the biggest names in music including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Alice Cooper and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones!
