New Festival Neighborhood, New Plays Commissioned
Fringe Festival Preview: Sunday, July 8, 2018
WASHINGTON, DC – It’s a year of firsts for the Capital Fringe Festival.
Fringe Curated Series — Curated and commissioned works by emerging and established artist across disciplines. Works range from dance, music, performance, and theatre, to art.
• America's Wives by Farah Lawal Harris
One Older Wife. One Younger Wife. One Bald Eagle. And America. Adapted from a Yoruba folktale, this timely and surprising script explores identity, love and greed in today’s world
• Andromeda Breaks by Stephen Spotswood
Southern Gothic horror infuses an updated version of the Greek myth of Andromeda. Here we find the heroine, Andromeda, in a police interrogation room, accused of murder. But all is not what it seems in this shocking contemporary thriller.
• The City Of by Matthew Capodicasa
Inspired by the Jorge Luis Borges short story, Funes the Memorious, this new play tells the story of Irene and Arthur and their struggle as the world around them starts to lose its collective memory. This poetic, intimately beautiful play explores what it means to forget, and more importantly, to remember.
• Barococo — Happenstance Theater Company Happenstance Theater
(Happenstance Theatre was founded in 2006 at the inaugural Capital Fringe Festival) In this new collaboratively devised ensemble work, six clowns portray oblivious entitlement on the brink of extinction, as the award-winning ensemble of Happenstance Theater takes a dive into the late Baroque.
• O Monsters — New Paradise Laboratories
This visual and experimental performance creates a world of weirdness and beauty, an unstable reality where nothing can be predicted, where meteors make beautiful music and blades falling from the sky can save your life.
