Smithsonian National Postal Museum
2 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, District of Columbia 20002
Every year, we celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 at the National Postal Museum. Finally, there were train tracks connecting the East and the West, allowing the Post Office to quickly move mail by trains across the entire country. Over time, trains have played an important role in keeping our nation connected.
At the National Postal Museum's Train Day Celebration explore the Railway Post Office by checking out the inside of the train car, learn how train conductors use whistle signals to communicate, and get to know some jargon used by Postal Clerks who worked on the Railway Post Offices. Enjoy a special Story Time and “meet” Owney the Dog, the mascot of the Railway Post Office! Experience the magical, miniature world of model railroads running throughout the museum thanks to the following program partners: the Rappahannock Model Railroaders, the Washington, Virginia & Maryland Garden Railway Society, and the Northern Virginia NTRAK.
Free admission; all ages welcome. More info: postalmuseum.si.edu/visit/train-day.html
