Whether it was serious or just for fun, Cobourg’s Luke Gruntz and Ian Fraser have been playing music together for as long as they can remember.
Best friends since the age of four, it wasn’t until they graduated from high school that the rock duo formed the band cleopatrick.
“In high school, we were in a couple of different bands. But, as Grade 12 came around and the pressures of applying to school and furthering our lives started to become apparent, we kind of decided to take music a bit more seriously,” Gruntz said.
After a brainstorming session to come up with a thought-provoking name, they combined two words and cleopatrick was born.
“I said, ‘What if we did cleopatrick?’ And Ian hated it, but then it grew on him,” said Gruntz during an interview, shortly after hosting an invite-only single release party in Toronto on Feb. 3 for their song Bernard Trigger. “Now, it’s just our name. It’s permanent.”
Asked about their music, he said the duo is naturally labelled as rock, but they don’t necessarily see themselves as such.
“It’s kind of a weird thing for us being 20-year-olds in 2018, since rock isn’t the coolest genre to be in,” he added. “That’s just because nothing really significant has happened with that kind of music in 20 years.”
Gruntz said cleopatrick is trying to do something new and exciting with the genre.
“We try to be really honest and one of the biggest genres now is hip hop, which is an outlet for young people’s honesty, their stories and their own feelings,” he said. “Every other genre doesn’t really have that — it’s more commercial, dumbed down or overproduced. For us, we’re just trying to tell honest stories and I happen to play guitar.”
