Established in 1867 in Southeast Washington on land purchased by the Freedmen's Bureau, the Barry Farm/Hillsdale community was one of D.C.'s first free black home-owning communities. What is the history of this community — and what happened to it? Alcione Amos shares her research, which connects emancipation from slavery to black homeownership in Washington, D.C. Ms. Amos will be joined by Nicole Vazquez of the Barry Farm Tenants and Allies Association and Empower DC, who will discuss current struggles to preserve housing for low-income people in the Barry Farm/Hillsdale community.

This program will be held at the University of the District of Columbia, Van Ness Campus, 4200 Connecticut Avenue NW, Bldg 41, Room A-03D.
