In commemoration of Women’s History Month, curator Alcione M. Amos presents a talk about the lives of ten women from the historic settlement of Barry Farm/Hillsdale in SE Washington, DC. Established in 1867 by the Freedmen’s Bureau to help solve the housing problem created by the arrival of at least 50,000 African American refugees in Washington, DC during the Civil War, the community's first settlers included forty-six women. The life stories will range from that of a young enslaved girl separated from her parents, to the second African American woman to receive a PhD.
