As part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival, Round House Theatre presents a FREE staged reading of the play «If Pretty Hurts, Ugly Must Be a Muhf*cka» by Tori Sampson, directed by Literary Manager Gabrielle Hoyt. Join us on Sunday, January 21 at 6:00 pm in the Patron’s Lounge to commemorate International Women’s Voices Day with a reading of this work by an up-and-coming female playwright.
Set in the fictional world of Affreakah-Amirrorkah, «If Pretty Hurts…» follows the characters Akim, Adama, Kaya, and Massassi who are young women entering adulthood. Akim stands apart from the other three, subjecting her to the scrutiny and criticism of her jealous peers. Combining both African and American societal views, «If Pretty Hurts…» examines how we edit and alter ourselves in pursuit of public approval. To RSVP, follow the ticket link above or call the theatre box office at 240.644.1100.
International Women’s Voices Day is the anniversary of the Women’s March 2017. As a way of putting female playwrights into the spotlight, theatres around the country are presenting staged readings of unproduced works by women. These events are part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival.
