NOTE: The museum will open at 8 a.m. on December 7 for this special day of events. Attendees will be able to enter the virtual reality lottery and experience the 3D scan of a cooking pot that was on the USS Arizona at the Sailor in a Box table prior to the presentations.
— In remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, join the National Museum of the United States Navy for an eyewitness account of the wreck of the USS Arizona and a discussion on cutting edge technology used to document and educate for posterity. Guests will have an opportunity to enter a lottery for an immersive virtual reality experience of the USS Arizona, and see and touch a 3D color scan of an artifact from the battleship.
Rear Admiral Edward K. Walker, Jr. SC, USN (Retired) to describe his firsthand account of seeing the attack on Pearl Harbor as a young boy. He served 34 years in the Navy Supply Corps after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1954. During his long and distinguished career, he served at sea in a number of surface and subsurface commands, and ashore in various tours in Norfolk, Newport, Panama and at the Pentagon on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Technologist Pete Kelsey to share the current state of the USS Arizona and efforts to document and preserve this important naval treasure. From 2012-2014, working as the project manager, he was a key player in the first comprehensive survey/reality capture project of the USS Arizona and Memorial. By combining underwater laser scanning, traditional sonar, and terrestrial LiDAR, he will discuss the project and how to put together a precise image of the wreck in shallow water.
Three Virtual Reality Experiences (Lottery Process)
Visitors will have an opportunity to be selected for a limited virtual reality experience of the USS Arizona.

2D version of the virtual experience will be projected on the screen as others engage in the process.
Sailor in a Box Program
•Unique opportunity to see and touch a 3D scan of a cooking pot that was on the USS Arizona. Sailor in a Box provides an opportunity for visitors to experience a wide variety of historical naval artifacts.
3D Model of USS Arizona
•Using underwater photography, a 3D color model from laser scan data was used to reconstruct the USS Arizona. This model will be added to the museums “Valor in the Pacific: A Remembrance” exhibit on display through January 18, 2018.
