IlluminAsia: A Festival of Asian Art, Food, and Cultures

Spend a full weekend celebrating Asian art, food, and culture on the National Mall to mark our reopening this fall. Free and open to the public, IlluminAsia will transform the museums’ grounds into a vibrant night market, complete with food stalls, live music, and performances. Inside, visitors will experience the newly reimagined galleries and a series of new temporary exhibitions, as well as specially programmed in-gallery experiences.

IlluminAsia kicks off the evening of Saturday, October 14. The Saturday evening program will light up the night with a sea of lanterns, light displays, and video-art projections. Food and art stalls, hosted in partnership with Asian-American community organizations from the Washington, DC, area, will provide a multisensory experience of Asian art, food, and culture.

On Sunday, the market continues alongside a family day of activities throughout the museums, including special stroller tours for young families, hands-on art-making workshops, and kite-flying on the National Mall.

Afterward, our celebration continues with a full reopening season, featuring a spectrum of special public programs and activities. Stay tuned for more details.

IlluminAsia is copresented with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

Event Details — Please Read Carefully!

Registration: No tickets are required – just show up. This event is open to the public and all are welcome including children, families, groups and non Meetup members.

Weather: The event is both indoors and outdoors and will take place rain or shine. If it’s on the calendar, then we’re proceeding as scheduled.

Metro Station: Smithsonian

Parking: There is parking throughout the area.

Meeting Point: The event officially starts at 5:00 pm in and around the Freer-Sackler Galleries. However, let’s meet at 4:30 pm SHARP at the Smithsonian Metro Station – the Independence and 12th Street exit (not the National Mall exit). We’ll have our traditional group icebreaker introductions so people can get to know each other before we depart. Throughout the evening look Robert and/or people with our Meetup stickers, which we’ll hand out. If you arrive after 4:30 good luck finding us (i.e. needle in haystack syndrome) although you can look for people with Meetup stickers and/or use the comments sections in the event description to try and find us. Best bet is just to meet us 4:30 at the Smithsonian Metro.

Logistics: This is an extremely large event with many different activities taking place simultaneously. We have no idea what exact events we’ll be visiting, when, where, etc. until the actual event starts. Throughout the evening the entire group is not required to stay together, although you are welcome to do so. Usually in events like this smaller groups split off to go do what interests them, which is fine.

Additional Questions: Anything that can’t be answered by the event description, Google or common sense please let us know.
