The experience will include:
Meditation: Honoring the elements, water, air, fire, earth and the four directions. Calling the spirit of your drum, preparing the hoop, pulling the hides and creating your mallet. Setting your intention — offering your drum in service.
Step by step drum making instruction — 10 inch Elk Drum.
We will be focusing on the universal aspect of drums and drumming especially on the sacredness of the act of commitment of giving voice to our deepest and best intentions. The workshop is open to people of all faith and cultural backgrounds to gather and focus our spiritual intentions on the kind of world we wish to build. We appreciate culture and traditions and are inspired by them, but are not claiming any one group's cultural traditions.
When you arrive for the workshop, the heads and lacings will have been soaked in ceremonial water. After the initial smudging ceremony, meditation and blessing, you will learn to weave the lacing on your drum in the four directions pattern. This will be an opportunity for you to begin calling the spirit of your drum.
Once we complete the drum lacing, we will then create the beater for your drum. If you have some special beads or feathers which you would like to decorate your drum you may also bring them. The drum will take 2-3 days to fully dry before it can be played. The drum face can be painted later if desired.
