Arun Ramamurthy is a versatile violinist, composer and educator based in NYC. A disciple of the celebrated Carnatic violinist brothers, Dr. Mysore Manjunath & Sri Mysore Nagaraj, Arun has become one of the country’s leading Indian Classical and crossover musicians. He has carved a niche for himself as a multifaceted artist, performing internationally in both traditional Carnatic and Hindustani settings as well as bridging genres with his own innovative projects. He leads the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, an ensemble that brings a fresh approach to age-old South Indian classical repertoire and raga inspired originals. Praised by All About Jazz as “a beautiful, exotic, ear-opening listening experience” the Trio’s debut album “Jazz Carnatica” was picked by NPR’s New Sounds as a Top New Release. Arun is a co-founder and artistic director of Brooklyn Raga Massive, a collective of forward thinking musicians rooted-in and inspired-by the classical music of India. He created the concert series Carnatic Sundays at Cornelia Street Café, an iconic jazz venue in New York’s West Village. As an educator, Arun teaches students of all levels in Indian music performance, technique and theory, and has taught workshops at music schools, universities and conservatories.

KARAVIKA is a New York City based chamber ensemble led by violinist Trina Basu and cellist Amali Premawardhana, exploring music of India, Sri Lanka and the Americas in a improvising chamber music setting. Pioneers of their own genre “raga chamber folk” Karavika blends the classical music of India, the folk music of the Americas, and the chamber music sensibilities of Western classical music. Drawing upon influences of nature, beauty, simple melodies and complex classical compositions, they seek to bring together creative improvisations and arrangements with authentic traditions. Their debut album, «Sunrise» features collaborative reinterpretations of old film and folk music from South Asia. All About Jazz praised the album as «A dynamic sonic blend of uncommon mesmeric beauty.» Their second release «Of Earth & Sky” is a deeper exploration of their various musical influences they as an ensemble have come to embody, old and new, east and west. The CD is a collection of songs all dancing around various manifestations of love, largely inspired by family and motherhood. Karavika collaborates with Perry Wortman on bass and Advait Shah on tabla.

After the performance our jam session will follow. We are focused on encouraging spontaneous collaboration between smaller groups of musicians. Pairs, trios, quartets: join up with other musicians that are present or that you've met at past events and sign up for a slot to play. We only ask that your performance is rooted in or inspired by the tradition of Indian Classical Music.
