Black Dolls | Mirtho Linguet
August 18 – October 7, 2017
In Washington at the Anacostia Arts Center, discover «Black Dolls» a remarkable exhibition by the photograph Mirtho Linguet which questions all of us: what is Racism and how does it work?
Inspired by the 1973 poem: «Limbé» by Léon-Gontran Damas [French Guiana, 1912 – Washington DC, 1978/ co-founder of the Negritude movement], French Guianese creative Mirtho Linguet presents a visually impactful series of images.
“Give me back my black dolls
so they dispel
the eternal image
the hallucinatory image
of stacked large assed puppets
whose miserable mercy
the wind carries to the nose”.
by Léon-Gontran Damas
In the Black Dolls series, Mirtho Linguet manifests scenarios in a form of question to visualize the lived experiences of those called «non-white people» all over the world, who live under the basic universal situation known as Racism.
Black Dolls will run August 18 – October 7 in Vivid Solutions Gallery (located within the Anacostia Arts Center, 1231 Good Hope Road SE Washington, DC 20020) An opening reception will be held on August 19 5-8PM. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10AM – 7PM, Sunday 10AM – 3PM and by appointment.
