Access to affordable, nutritious food options shouldn’t be a privilege, yet it’s a right that many DC residents live without. According to the USDA, much of Southeast DC and some neighborhoods in Northeast are considered food deserts. They’re classified as low-income areas where residents don’t have a grocery store within a mile. A lack of access to affordable and nutritious food options impacts residents’ health and wellness and often marks a lack of smart development and community infrastructure. Organizations large and small, including community gardens and farmers’ markets, have stepped up and made serving these areas a priority. But what more can we do?

Bring your ideas to the next Unlikely Allies discussion Thursday, October 26th, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm to examine what’s being done and what more we can do to eradicate food deserts. There will be refreshments, resources from community organizations working on this issue, networking opportunities, and a hands-on activity to think through next steps and possible solutions.
