JULIA NIXON SINGS THE SONGS OF BURT BACHARACH & HAL DAVID with the DAVE YLVISAKER DOZEN
The wondrous songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David were first burned into our hearts during the sixties when their music was everywhere; on the radio, in the movies and on television. Their utterly distinctive & riveting take on pop music earned them more than 50 top forty hits atop the charts, where they were perched for about 10 years.
The string of hits (I Say a Little Prayer, Walk On By, Do You Know The Way to San Jose, You’ll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart, Alfie, The Look of Love, Always Something There To Remind Me) kept coming and found the greatest singers of the day such as Dusty Springfield, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, & most prominently, Dionne Warwick, lining up to sing the next Bacharach-David smash. Burt Bacharach’s music is known for its dramatic chord changes, jazz voicings, and tricky rhythms all cleverly disguised within some of the catchiest melodies ever sung. Hal David’s smart and graceful lyrics were of adult concerns sung to an audience of emerging adults, and are notable for their honesty and subtle wit. Burt Bacharach and Hal David have received the Gershwin Prize, Kennedy Center Honors and are in the Rock & Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Their music’s popularity continues today as new generations of fans discover the timeless treasures found in their songs.
Julia Nixon has been one Washington’s finest and most popular singers for more than 30 years,
going back to a fabled decade long residency at Mr. Henry’s. She appeared in a lead role on Broadway in ‘Dreamgirls’, and won a Helen Hayes Award for Best Actress in a Musical Production for her role in Studio Theaters ‘Caroline or Change’.
Her longtime pianist Dave Ylvisaker leads a superlative 12 person band, complete with horns, strings and backing vocalists to capture the majesty and magic found in Bacharach’s arrangements. The band includes some of the area’s most versatile and accomplished musicians including Andy Hamburger (drums), Chuck Underwood (guitar) Scott Giambusso (bass), Al Williams (sax & flute), Zack Smith (trumpet) Mike Mills (keyboards) Margot MacDonald (backing vocals), Deeme Katson (backing vocals), Elizabeth Lademan (violin) & Stephen Czarkowski (cello)
