Dive into Afro-Cuban culture and join the National Museum of African Art for a screening of Oggun: An Eternal Presence! The film (dir. Gloria Rolando, 1992, Cuba, 52 min., Spanish with English subtitles) is narrated by Lázaro Ros, apwong (Yoruba praise singer) and advocate for the preservation of Afro-Cuban culture for future generations. Screened as a compliment the museum’s exhibition Currents(http://s.si.edu/2oYnw5p), Ros tells a parable of Oggun, the banished warrior deity who only Oshun, deity of the river and fresh water, luxury and pleasure, beauty and love, can lure back to civilization for the good of humanity.

Oggun is presented as part of the museum’s African in Reel Time series. Join us every month for a screening and discussion!

Free and open to the public
